Putting together this podcast has been particularly special for the OFFSIDE Team. That’s because we are so excited to have had the chance to speak with women’s hockey royalty, goaltender Sami Jo Small about everything from her brand new book The Role I Played, which chronicles her journey with Team Canada / Équipe Canada and her many accomplishments while representing the red and white on international ice with HockeyCanada, to what she believes needs to happen to ensure the #femalegame continues to grow, including a viable professional league for the top female players in the world.

OFFSIDE: The Podcast hosts Rhonda Taylor and Kris Lipscombe are truly honoured to have had the chance to chat with Small, who is a two-time Olympic gold medallist, three-time Olympian and four-time world champion. Small was also instrumental in creating and building the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.”Once I started writing, I realized that these stories were much bigger than me,” Small told #OFFSIDE. “It was really a time in history, that I think – similar to your book – is forgotten; is not talked about. And in the era of what we are going through right now in women’s hockey, I think it’s really important for people to know our history.”

“History, to me, is so key and so vital for moving forward,” Small said, adding she also wants to highlight the incredible people she’s played with and worked with within the women’s hockey world.

“It was a 10-year project for me,” she said, “but I wanted to get it right.”
